Master Irish Fiddle with Gerry O'Connor

A 10-week structured online course for intermediate fiddle and violin players

About This Course

I have spent my life playing, teaching, and passing on this music. This course is the most structured thing I have built for students who are serious about making real progress.

It is not for complete beginners. You need to already be playing at an intermediate level, because from week one we are working from notation, play-through videos, and technique-focused material that assumes you can already hold a bow and read some music.

Over 10 weeks, I will take you through the things that actually matter. The things that separate someone who plays notes from someone who plays music.

Choose the Self-Guided course to work independently, or join the Live Mentored course for weekly personal guidance and feedback directly from me.

Taught By One of Ireland's Great Fiddle Players

“One of the great fiddle players of his generation.” – IrishFest.com

He has won numerous All-Ireland titles across solo, duet, trio and Céilí Band competitions, and recorded four CDs on the Claddagh label with Lá Lúgh and Skylark. He has toured and recorded with members of Planxty, the Bothy Band, De Dannan, Boys of the Lough and The Chieftains. His solo album Journeyman was named among the top five albums of 2004 by The Irish Times. This course comes from a lifetime of playing, teaching and passing on the tradition, not performing it for show.

What Is Included Each Week

Each of the 10 weekly classes includes:

  • A 20 to 30 minute video lesson with examples and explanations.
  • Two, three or four tunes with full sheet music provided. Every lesson vary.
  • Focus on technique, phrasing, bowing, and authentic Irish style
  • Written notes and practice guidance

The course lessons are released weekly so you work through it at a structured pace, one class at a time.

Inside Bow with the Flow

More Than Learning Tunes

The course focuses on the technique, control and musical understanding that change how you actually sound when you play.

What You'll Work On

Develop the Sound Behind the Notes

Bow Control & Phrasing
Develop the control and phrasing at the heart of Irish fiddle playing.
Traditional Ornamentation
Work with cuts, rolls, slurs, triplets and other techniques in musical context.
Rhythm & Timing
Develop rhythm that feels natural rather than simply being metrically correct.
Traditional Irish Style
Understand phrasing, regional character and how to move beyond simply playing the notes.
Is This Course for You?

Built for Players Ready to Move Forward

You already play fiddle or violin at an intermediate level.
You feel your playing has stalled and want structured progress.
You want your playing to sound more naturally Irish.
You want to improve how you play, rather than simply learn more tunes.
i
Intermediate Level Bow with the Flow is not designed for complete beginners. You should already be comfortable playing fiddle or violin before starting the course.

Why Bow with the Flow Works

Stop Practising Without Knowing What to Fix

Many players stay at the same level because they keep learning new tunes without addressing the technique behind their playing. Bow with the Flow gives you a clear structure and a reason behind what you practise each week.

01

A Clear Path

Instead of jumping between random tunes, you follow a structured 10-week programme where each lesson builds on what came before.

02

Work on What Matters

The focus is not simply on learning more music. You work on bowing, rhythm, phrasing and technique so the music itself starts to sound different.

03

Choose the Support You Need

Work independently through the Self-Guided course, or choose Live Mentoring and let Gerry hear your playing and guide you personally each week.

Self-Guided or Live Mentored?

The Difference Is Not the Course Content.
It Is Access to Gerry.

Both versions include the same complete 10-week programme. Live Mentoring adds weekly direct contact with Gerry, giving him the opportunity to hear your playing, answer questions and give you personal feedback.

O'Connor Violins
Looking for an instrument, bow or repair?
Gerry also sells instruments and carries out violin and bow repairs through O'Connor Violins.
