SUMMARY:The Rose in the Gap Concert /Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Gerry O’Connor will present a Concert Lecture on a recent publication of traditional Instrumental music from the South East Ulster area “The Rose in the Gap” \nHis talk will highlight the rich body of dance music\, song and dance that was in circulation in Counties Louth\, Armagh\, Monaghan and Cavan over 100 year ago. The influence of Scottish music and culture celebrated in this area will also be examined \nA Power Point presentation illuminating the concert lecture will feature landscape images of the area\, maps locating the music to place\, and quality images of the original hand written manuscripts which are been made available for the first time. During the presentation music from the collection will be played live by the author. \nThis 50 min presentaton will feature Gerry giving the background to the Gaelic Cultural revival of the early 20th Century . He will describe the process of re-imaginating this unique body of melodies from the dusty archives of University College Dublin and will perform a variety tunes from the collection\, presenting all in an entertaining and professional manner.

For those taking any of the style classes for fiddle\, it is recommended that students should play at an Intermediate level: students should have mastered beginning skills\, be able to tune their instruments\, keep time\, play the principal scales cleanly\, and know how to play a few tunes with confidence. Fiddle classes are double-length\, and students may take either intermediate or advanced classes\, but not both. The uilleann pipes class is also double-length. Fiddlers who plan on taking both Irish and Scottish fiddle should consider their stamina and the available practice time before registering for two daily 2 1⁄2 hour classes. \nFor novices\, “Fiddle for Complete Beginners” will cover the basics and two sections of“FiddleTechnique”will address technical problems for all players\, while“Tinwhistle for Complete Beginners” will provide new whistle players with a repertoire of simple tunes. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Gerry O’Connor will spend time with this group of Fiddle Students showing and explaining \nsome Typical Bowing Patterns in Irish Music specific to the playing of Dance music. \nThis class is offered to students of an intermediate level of fiddle playing. \nSome experience in learning by ear would be an advantage; a positive approach to \nattempting to learn by watching and listening is essential \nThe bowing and articulation of bow patterns in the playing of jigs and other familiar dance rhythms introduced in the early part of the class will provide the basis for a systematic approach to a generic playing of Irish fiddle music suitable for this level of experience.This will enable the student to identify some repetitive patterns of bowing which\, although non specific\, will aid the student in understanding the non- random activity of fiddle bow activity in Irish fiddle playing. \nAudio and selective video recording is encouraged. The notation of the workshop tunes with some typical bowing motifs indicated will be forwarded by email after the class. Video clips of all the music taught in this class will be forwarded after the class \nThe focus in this class will be not just to learn more tunes but to improve the ability to play and enjoy the experience of playing the fiddle. A class of 10 -12 would be considered appropriate.

SUMMARY:Album Launch ; Gerry O'Connor & Gilles le Bigot : Live in Oriel" at Centre Cultural Irlandaise Paris
DESCRIPTION:Just before the first lockdown Irish fiddle player Gerry O’Connor and  Breton Guitarist Gilles le Bigot  had prepared to record a second album of their music as a follow up to their previously live album recorded in Gille’s hometown of Dournanez in 2007.  \n A successful Crowdfunding campaign\, in conjunction with an intimate style Irish tour was put on hold until Aprii 7th 2022 when the recording was made as part of the Féile Patrick Byrne at the recently restored Patrick Kavanagh Centre in Inniskeen on the Louth/ Monaghan border in the ancient Oriel region\, an area long celebrated for its poetry and music.  \nThe album was recorded in front  of a restricted audience . The result was 12 tracks of instrumental music showcasing the depth and virtuosity of these two experienced musicians. Over half the album contains previously unrecorded material by the Duo\, interspersed  with sets of Breton and Irish music Gerry and Gilles hade recorded In their 25 years of collaborating on albums and projects\, including Lå Lugh\, Oirialla\, Fiddle Rendezvous\, Caliana  and Bilingua  \nCompositions of le Bigot and recently sourced local tunes by O’Connor pepper the album\, resulting in truly representative take on these musicians repertory.  \nProduced and engineered by Dónal O’Connor\,  (At First Light\, Ulaid\, Bilingua\, Roisin Reimagined  etc ) the album of offers a true representation of this duos collective  legacy of over 80 years professional performance and recording ! \nGerry O’Connor and Gilles le Bigot “Live in Oriel “ Lughnasa Music  LUGCD967

SUMMARY:SSWC Willie Clancy Summer School
DESCRIPTION:Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy is a week-long summer school in traditional music and set dance held annually at Miltown Malbay\, Co. Clare. The first and biggest of such events\, it commemorates the town’s best-known uilleann piper\, Willie Clancy\, and has been running since just after his death in 1973. The idea was initiated by Clancy himself\, and implemented within six months by teacher Muiris Ó Rócháin in collaboration with CCE’s timire ceoil Séamus Mac Mathúna and local musicians Martin Talty\, Paddy Joe McMahon and Junior Crehan. The school is focused around the teaching of instruments and set dancing in formal classes\, but stresses the value of the oral/aural tradition. In its fleadh-style volume of music-making in bars it has become something of a Mecca in the music\, its retinue of up to a hundred and fifty teachers\, and hundreds of improving and competent musicians\, dancers and singers drawing in thousands of listeners. The school addresses the cultural and intellectual side of traditional music by the inclusion of daily workshops on singing and the tradition\, afternoon lectures and evening recitals. The ‘Breandán Breathnach memorial lecture’\, given by various authorities in traditional music\, opens the school\, a music tribute at Clancy’s grave\, launch of albums and publications in traditional music follow. Scores of impromptu sessions accompany these organised activities\, nightly set dance and céilis complement a routine of morning classes given by top players on uilleann pipes\, flute\, tin whistle\, concertina\, fiddle\, button accordion and set dancing.
